“King David said to his son Solomon: `Be confident and determined. Start the work and don’t let anything stop you. The Lord God, whom I serve, will be with you. He will not abandon you, but he will stay with you until you finish the work to be done on his Temple.’”

1 Chronicles 28, v20

St John's in the Community

Helping people, supporting people, inspiring people

From the west door of the Church we have a wonderful view of Pinner High Street – but just imagine for a moment what the High Street would look like without the church. St John’s is in the centre of Pinner Village and our beautiful building completes the picture postcard appeal of the High Street, attracting residents and visitors alike.

St John’s is, of course, primarily a place of worship, built hundreds of years ago as a place where Christians can worship and be seen to worship God. Acts of Christian worship take place not just on Sundays but on many weekdays too and it is a place where people come to be married; to baptise their children or be baptised themselves; to say farewell to and celebrate the lives of those who have died; to pray. We welcome many visitors to the major Christian festivals of Easter and Christmas and on Christmas Eve the church is bursting to the seams with families for whom our annual Christingle Service marks the beginning of Christmas.

But St John’s contribution to the wider community of Pinner extends beyond our life as a centre of Christian worship. The church itself is a popular venue for concerts: every year, for example, we play host to a series of jazz concerts and our own music festival and tickets are in high demand for both these series. Groups of children from many local schools visit in the course of the each year: for harvest festivals; carol services; leavers’ services; or to be shown around the church, learn about its history, look at its beautiful stained glass windows and have the opportunity to ring the bells (always popular!).

Our Church Hall is host to all manner of events and activities from ballet to zumba; RSPB to yoga; pre-school for 3-5 year olds and Pinner Nippers for under 3s and their parents/carers. People hire the Hall for birthday parties, retirement dos, weddings, funerals, engagements and other celebrations. Pinner Sketch Club puts on an exhibition of its work every summer.

Our church is a very important place for many children in the area. As well as the activities already mentioned every Sunday we run KidzKlub at 9.00am and Junior Church at 11.00am for a growing group of 3 – 11 year olds; our church choir has a well-deserved reputation and for many children has provided an important introduction to the joy of singing and its importance in Christian worship; our annual Holiday Club, which always has a waiting list has grown year on year and in 2011 hit record numbers. Our Youth Minister’s responsibilities extend beyond the church doors and she regularly visits many local schools to take assemblies, run clubs and participate in school trips.

These activities are only possible because our church is loved and cared for by many people. Please help us to ensure that our church continues to flourish as a centre of worship and activity for the community of Pinner.
